Music I'm listening to the week of October 27, 2008
2008年 10月 28日, 0:52
My first journal entry in a long, long time. I'm trying to introduce myself back into blogging regularly, because I've been so out of practice with being so busy with school and other things.
So, I've had the opportunity to listen to quite a few albums, some prior to their release (Lady Gaga namely, I have to thank a friend whose really into her, but I don't know if she's going to be too happy what I have to say about her ^^) while others have been released for some time.
So on the pop spectrum, I've listened to Lady GaGa
's "The Game", and Keane's "Perfect Symmetry". I've had a little more time to digest Keane's "Perfect Symmetry" than "The Game".
To start with Lady Gaga's "The Game", I completely came into her music blindsided by a stray music recommendation. I don't mind delving into a bit of mainstream pop now and again, so long as it manages to be unique.
Dagnabit, I came into this album thinking it was just standard fare and after several listensI really became hooked on it. It's probably the second album in a while that I've changed my mind on with repeated listens. She mixes some interesting electro pop with house and other elements melodically, so people who hear it will likely gravitate towards it if they love some good club dancing music. I like some electronically focused music with good beats (if my love for Daft Punk doesn't say enough :P Sadly they aren't near the top of my last.fm profile now, but I'm sure that'll change as I come back into listening to them again-as you can tell, I have a scattered pattern of listening habits.) Yet, I also look for meaning in songs that really resonate with me. Lady Gaga has a lot of style, but varies on substance. Some songs are uber catchy ("Just Dance"; "Poker Face", "Beautiful Dirty Rich", the latter is interesting because it mixes some interesting house elements), some are classy and smooth sounding ("Summer Boy" which reminds me of something Gwen Stefani would do) while othersare just downright cookie cutter ("Boys Boys Boys" namely, which was perhaps the only song on the album that didn't really grow on me, but my opinion might change a week from now.).
Lady Gaga has an interesting voice and she really excels more when she's bringing a fierce, biting attitude to the table. Some of the songs here really don't take as many creative liberties as they could, but after listening to the whole album, it's all intended not to be taken too seriously, just focus on some creative (albeit very stereotypical) wordplay and emphasized beats.
So on a re-rank, I'm giving Lady Gaga the benefit of the doubt, she makes a great, easily danceable album. Though, for the record: the Canadian and European releases are better than the U.S. version. :P 3/5
Keane
's "Perfect Symmetry
" is really another evolution of the band in many respects. I was *uber* skeptical when I first heard the album, because it really does borrow 80's elements and has greater electronic influences than their other albums have (though Under the Iron Sea hinted at this progression with "Is it Any Wonder").
But contrary what a lot of people have said: this is still very much Keane in top form, and considering I've listened to the album more than 10 times now, it's very much a grower (meaning you really have to listen to it more than once to get into it), and it's a beautiful album. I won't say it's perfect, or even as consistent as their previous albums, but I'm startled as to how many people are quick to label it as typical synth pop, when it really excels over the genre by a mile. Matter of fact, that label is VERY misleading (and for the record, I have very few favorites in the synth genre, so this is saying something).
This album really doesn't have that many points where the electronic, 80's influence is prominent. There's still very many songs here that are distinctly beautiful and placid on the ears. The title track is just one example, beautiful arrangement and definitely the cornerstone of the album for its strong lyricism and melodic leanings. It's meanings are so lighthearted, yet anthemic and soaring in tonality. "Lovers are Losing", "Black Burning Heart"; "Pretend that You're Alone" (which actually could have fit right on "Hopes and Fears", if thinking about the stylistics of "Everybody's Changing" with a little added light guitar), "Playing Along"; "Love is the End" and "You Don't See Me" are within the same vein, strong beautiful and songs that carry the consistency of their piano prominent arrangements and beautiful lyricism.
Now as far as the more electronic influences: there really aren't as many instances as many critics of the album seem to claim. Matter of fact, the vast majority of songs here either have spot elements of it ("Again and Again") or don't really focus on it at all, as listed in the songs above.
The strongest influence of it might come in the form of the energetic and anthemic "Spiraling", which, personally, I found to be one of their most well-written songs in their entire discography, particularly noted lyrically. It may be a shock to the nerves for some like "Is it Any Wonder?" was on a dynamic instrumental level, but it's hard to not note it as a beautiful song if you really listen to it-it has so many ties to how the band has molded themselves progressively, and it also has such a nice, collective societal theme to it. "Better than This" was the only song that I didn't, and still don't like in collective measures. Tom's vocals are stretched a little more than I would personally take comfort in listening to, though I did prefer the demo version because it didn't quite sound as "processed". I could see quite a few people who might be put off by this song, but for others, it may not bother them at all. "You Haven't Told Me Anything" is probably the only song on the album that's more melodically driven in this stylistic and doesn't focus as much on lyrics, but it's a rather catchy pop song, and it's easy to sing along to as well as gives you a emphatic lift as you hear it.
I have to give credit to the band for trying something unique with this album. Granted, it had a few bumps in the road, but considering this is one of the most well progressed bands in terms of evolution while maintaining a consistent stylistic, and one that feels genuine and not for "the sake of change", I can forgive a few dim spots. Beautiful listen. 3.5/5.
More to come as the week goes on, I'll update this before Friday, and then transfer it to my main media blog to do a massive review album post (my first in a while).

Beta goes alpha, reactions and other reflections on the "New" Last.fm
2008年 7月 24日, 14:34
I've actually made spot comments, suggestions, and feedback notes in a multitude of threads on the forums and communities in response to this, but I figure there should be a place where I can gather the collective bunch of my thoughts and feedback regarding my position, because it not only keeps it in a tidy, collected place, but also keeps it consistent and perhaps might be helpful to those who come across it.
I'm a fair, open-minded person when it comes to change in any respect. I've been a member of Last.fm since 2005, so I've seen it go through numerous changes. Each time it's changed, a number of improvements to the site made it easier to use, accessible, and what I liked about it was that it remained an easy source for me to have access to a wealth of music. I credit Last.fm for introducing me to what are some of my favorite bands at present, and rekindling interest in those that were mixed in the framework of my childhood. It's probably been the site I've been most active on, for a music community, for a while, despite some marked absences when I couldn't scrobble as much music as I wanted.
Not so very long ago, the site uploaded the latest version of the site. I remember trying the beta only a marked number of days before the site went liveenough time to see the direction it was headed, but not enough to fully peruse the site. I think the biggest bone I had to pick in retrospect was that the site went live way too soon, and that left me disgruntled, but not enough to threaten to leave the site or stop using the service entirely (which I find rather puerile, to be honest. If you don't like something, you always have the option to leave and leave respectfully, but I like many won't do something like that unless I felt like the service wasn't worth the effort in voicing out about.)
But did it ever light a fire under a lot of people. I can relate in some ways because it was such a stark, sudden change and I think that's what threw people the most, not to mention the stark lack of usable features that made the old version so convenient. Subscribers and those with invites were able to at least see the beta and make comments accordingly to it, but for those who never had access to the betawell, it's like jumping into a pool of scalding hot water. Not to mention the new features and the omissions from the old site weren't really clear cut from the get-go. After about a week, some things are coming along nicely, while there are still several kinks en route.
It's probably the first time in the years I've been on here that I've seen such a negative outburst from so many members, many of whom I've read had genuine concerns similar to my own. Granted, I remember the major change over several years back and similar reactions, but I think it's a balancing act between how much the site has grown since that time and the stark change this layout is from the previous one. At least in the past, there were a consistency of dark, rich colors in the layout, and it was never really done as simplistic as the current version boasts. Something to note: a look of simplicity doesn't necessarily replicate its ease, and while I recognize this look might be so that it may be easier for those to use on mobile devices and other mediums, it still leaves an impression that's about as empty as the white of the page.
The new alpha (or the former beta) version, has a stark difference, it's more simplified, graphic intensive, and yet feels quite empty, perhaps in part due to the color and structure scheme. I remember making the comment that the straight banner in the beta was way too plain and that it needed some cleaning up graphic-wise. The paint roll struck me better, but I thought more would be done to customize the site to fit that paint roll.
Turns out I was wrong, the simple style was here to stay, and in a sense, that did upset me, because I thought it would undergo so much more evolution. Not to mention the site went live: without journals, the reply tracker, and a number of other things from the previous site only a few days after I was starting to get my feet wet. I always switched back to the former alpha in the time I was testing the waters of the beta, so suffice to say it left me feeling very disappointed.
About a week or so after its implementation, a few things have started to fall into place, and it doesn't feel as stark of a difference, but suffice to say, I'm still with reservations about the beta turned alpha. This isn't so much a post to complain, or even give grief about the site in general, but to give a constructive review about it. Suffice to say, I have much to reflection on, about as many positives as there are negatives, but I'll start with the firm constructive feedback before coming into positives, because I like to end on positive notes.
For one, I miss the old dashboard immensely. I used the recommendation feature a lot with the previous version, and I found new music through both my friend recs and group recs. One of my friends, PopplagiWest, sent me a lot of recs on a semi-weekly or monthly basis and to date, I have him to credit to introducing me to holler wild rose!
, whom I love with a distinctive vigor now, among a few other artists. Since the beta, rare recommendations have been pretty hard to come by. New artists have also been hard for me to find in some measures. I was introduced to Cathi Burns
shortly before the beta also went live, and I have to credit the group recs feature for introducing her to me, because she's one of the artists I love to listen to at present.
True, I like being introduced to many bands that fall within my tastes and have a high degree of compatibility, which is why I find the new rec system not too shabby, but I feel it lacks a bit of individuality and interaction ease, not to mention its lumping with the inbox is perhaps the worst idea I could hear in terms of proposed changes-it was better when recs were given their own tab to sift through. Sure, I've known REO Speedwagon
as a similar group to a number of bands I listen tobut that doesn't necessarily mean I'd like them (to be honest, they aren't my cup of tea on a number of songs, but because I listen to Bad Company and Free, they were rec'd to me). It also makes me wonder how and why they're similar to what I listen toso you see there's a lack of direction in this new system that eliminated the personal touch that the former version had. It might be more "organized" in look, but it lacks that something extra the previous version had.
I also miss the journal tracker, I like reading up on what my friends and neighbors have to say, and I found a lot of interesting bands and friends to interact with that way. I'm not sure what the plans are for incorporating journals back into the new system, but I hope that this feature doesn't go neglected by any means.
I miss the minimized shoutbox. Granted, I like the fact I can now scroll through pages of messages that were left for me because I like to see the bit messages people leave on my profile. Yet, I don't understand why Last.fm decided to move it to the bottom of the page and not just give it a multiple page feature in its more minimized form on the sidebar. It took up less space, and the compact style was easy to see and breeze through without taking away from the music display on the page. I can understand the enlarged ones on the artist pages, but even those should have been kept to the sidebar because it felt lesswasted space.
No problems with the horizontal tabs, I like the look, but I feel more could be added to the dashboard section, even coming back to name it as "My Dashboard" would be appropriate because it makes it feel more personal. There should also be a link going to it because I like having that notation versus just "clicking on the Last.fm logo" to come to it. Makes it more distinctive and you can always come back to it distinctly.
Friends listening tab is fine, the options to toggle the recent activity on and off are fine (though I think recent activity feed is both helpful and hurtful. I like a degree of privacy and not let everyone else know what I'm doing every single second on Last.fm, but it does help in me finding conversations I've taken a part of in recent venuesthen again, I think the reply tracker should really do that moreso). I wouldn't mind Last.fm having an "invisible" feature as well, where you can toggle whether or not people can see the last time you've been on the site. Sometimes that's helpful for users who just want to be private as well, for the same reason as the activity feed. Yet, if a person has been inactive more than 60 days, I can understand why the "last activity" would be useful.
Now for the rolling charts: honestly, I have nothing constructively negative to say about the new charting system and I don't miss the fact my charts updated every Sunday, because it used to be such a long wait and sometimes there would be a delay for a few days before my previous week artists would show up. With the new version, definitely an improvement in the dynamic updating system. I also find it great that you can customize directly how many artists you show on your profile. What I miss is the recent track "quilt" that used to be with the old version. The new track style art by each track feels rather empty, but I think that was done to accommodate the graphic intensive library feature that is live at present. I don't have too many negatives to say about the library either, I think it's a great way to represent the artists listened to, and I can find every track/artist I've tagged, favorited, and listened to in addition to being able to remove artists and songs I know I never listened to (thanks to my twin sister who also has an account on Last.fm, but never really scrobbles to her own profile).
Flash player: way too chunky and clashing with the light colors of the display. I could understand a darker color scheme with the black, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. It needs to be minimized, just enough so you can see the album artwork (I like the fact it gives a CD case visual art to the album, and that you can see album titles more clearly, butit still feels like too much space is taken up. I was opposed at first to the CD case art, but I think if dimensions could be improved with it and more consistent with album art, it would work well. Maybe even use something like a slipcover artwork so that it still gives that glossy look).
The visual display of the library always struck me as a bit chunky on the first page. I like the option to list up to 8 artists, or fewer, on the page graphically, but the visual library would strike me as less "take up space" if it were on a sidebar of some sorts, and if more attention were given to the charts with an album qulit similar to the previous version.
I know a lot of the visual suggestions I'm making are similar to what this design resembles, but I think it looks a lot more consistent for what I would think looks better on the site than at present, but you could even dull this down slightly and make it look less cluttered.
i106.photobucket.com/albums/m264/michaelcox68/Picture1-5.png
However, i think the feedback I'm giving in terms of the utlity features are much more spot on in terms of what functionality the site should feature and why.
Those are just my two cents on the matter, and I think I'll probably add a part II to this as I come along sifting through the site, but these are just my firsthand notes and constructive criticisms. They're opinion, and should be taken with a grain of salt however, so they aren't intended to step on toes, as much as they are to give a point to press about what I'm finding works/doesn't work with the site.
Best,

My life as a movie soundtrack
2008年 7月 14日, 1:41
This was another interesting survey I came across a while ago; I had it saved for myself to fill out, but never had the chance to do it, until now.
These things are actually a great way to relax, I think, or at least get you to thinking about where your tastes lie, and even find funny just to see where some of the songs orient.
I think it suits me because I'm a random person when it comes to listening to music. I do listen to full albums, but I like hearing a variety in a given stretch. I'm adding a little to it by commenting about each song and what it means to me. I think a few of the categories were omitted, but oh well.
Here goes:
IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
Opening Credits:
Your Rain
by Akira Yamaoka/Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.
I'm actually surprised this song popped up first on my playlist, because it's definitely a song that personally resonates with me. There's such a melancholic, even cathartic feel to this overall, and it sings of loneliness. I sometimes listen to this song when I'm feeling sad, and I find it very soothing.
Best song to come from a video game in my eyes (Silent Hill 3), though people may argue with me on that ("Late Goodbye" by Poets of the Fall from Max Payne comes awfully close).
Waking Up:
A Million Miles Away
by The Plimsouls
Oh yeah, melodically, this would be a good song to wake up to. It's that style of power pop, new wave sound that I love. I'm trying to think of when I was first introduced to this band. I think mid-college, when listening to a number of bands at random I heard it first off an odd radio station on Live365, back when I used the service regularly. This particular song wasn't my first however, "Everywhere at Once" was.
First Day At School:
Home
Haha, yes, this would be a song singing my longing for wanting to go back home, maybe sleep in like I did in the summer and listen to songs like this, which is so soothing, you feel pulled into it.
On a serious note, I really love Great Northern. I love their style of shoegaze/ melodic pop-rock.
Home
by Michael Buble
Definitely another favorite song of mine that would fit this category to a tee. I love Michael Buble's vocal here, and the lyricism as well. It's just a beautiful song on many levels.
Shopping:
Ympyr
by Tiktak
I don't know if you could call this a type of song you can shop too, unless you're trapped inside the mall after hours at night and rushing around and just having fun.
The reason I say this because this is a very fun, energetic pop-rock song from a great group of girls from Finland. I'd go so far as to say they're my favorite female band hailing from the country. Unfortunately, I don't speak the language in which they sing, but when I first heard this song, I definitely fell into them. I have Last.fm to thank for my discovering them. :)
They do a great cover of "Should I Stay or Should I Go", sung entirely in English.
Hanging Out with Friends: IKE IKE
by Hinoi Team
Sure, considering I have very peppy, fun friends who would love this song, probably even more than I do at the moment.
I'll call this song a guilty pleasure; I don't really care for it anymore. Very eurobeat oriented song that I've heard way too many times to count, so much to the point where I've actually lost the interest I had invested in it when I first heard it. It's a great song with decent lyrics and vocals. If you like songs to dance to in Japanese, it's infectiously catchy.
First Kiss:
Cast Your Fate to the Wind
by Vince Guarldi Trio
Yes, this is the same composer of the Charlie Brown theme, "Linus and Lucy" (you know, the one Schroeder always plays in the episodes?). Very interesting. I suppose this could be a great song for a first kiss, very melodic, sweet and jazzy. It could tell a story about how your lover leans in for the right moment to kiss, misses several points, and then finally, in a climax, finds the right opportunity, in the right place and time.
"Cast Your Fate to the Wind" seems like an apt title for a "First Kiss" song as well. You're throwing aside all barriers and letting life take you on the ride it was meant to take. It's among my favorite instrumental songs.
Birthday: They
by Jem
This is a very, very weird song for a birthday theme. My guess is that I'd be stuck in a situation where the events of my birthday seem to revolve around the people composing the party, placing me in an embarrassing situation. Either that, or I'm witnessing a birthday in the style of a Tim Burton-esque celebration. If faced with either situation, I wouldn't quite know what to do. A friend of mine actually really loves this song, and I always think of her whenever I hear it now.
I definitely enjoy it as well because it sounds different from the style of most pop songs.
Party Scene: Woman Trouble
by Artful Dodger
This song makes me miss the days when Craig David was working with Artful Dodger. Great song to dance to, and his vocals are top notch, just gorgeous when he hits the the higher points in the song. It's a great song to dance to, two-step R&B done right.
Falling In Love:
Come & Talk to Me
by Jodeci
YES! I heard a Jodeci song that fits the theme to a tee. Jodeci was an R&B group I listened to as a little girl, and that I could only spot remember in terms of hearing their songs. It was only later in my pre-teen years that I came back into them, particularly when K-Ci and JoJo came back into the music scene as a group of their own. I remember when this song first debuted on my local radiothat's pretty bad, huh? Shows my age now.
This was one of their best songs, in my opinion.
Fight Song: Drown in My Own Tears
by The Smithereens
I could see this as a conflicting song, despite the randomness of my playlist and noting that it may not be a first choice for a fighting song . I'm a pretty mellow person, so this would work with me in terms of being in the aftermath of a fight. With the lines "Maybe I won't be afraid to love somebody/Maybe I can open up my heart/then I won't drown in my own tears" that makes it a conflicting song for me.
Breaking Up:
The Future Holds a Lion's Heart
by Darren Hayes
Wowconsidering this is one of my favorite songs from Darren's last album "This Delicate Thing We've Made", I'm surprised this is here, wouldn't have ever guessed this could be a break-up song.
Given the dramatic instrumentation, it definitely fits. Totally different meaning however. Though I'd argue these few lines do have some insinuation on the topic:
When I left the warm surroundings
Of my selfish difficult stage
When our eyes first met there was deja-vu
And a feeling I could not shake
Then gravity seduced me
And drew me to this place
I could swear we were together
In an entirely different age
To be honest, I think this is a song that's difficult for most tastes to come into for first listen, but I really enjoyed hearing it. Darren has one of those great, surging vocals that grab your attention. Sometimes his material and instrumentation may not (ex: his "Spin" album, while having a few good songs on it, didn't really grab me as much in later context.)
Prom:
Layla
by Eric Clapton
Not something I would imagine for a prom song, but all things considered, this would be a great song to be seen live. It's beautiful and definitely one of my favorite songs.
College: She Will Be Loved
by Maroon 5
This was a big song during my college years for me. I guess because I was really into Maroon 5 during the time, and I still am in modes. I liked the vibe of "Songs about Jane" on a collective note, because I liked how well it blended soul stylistics with melodic rock, and even the edgier tracks of the album were well done. I loved "Harder to Breathe" on the first listen, as I did with this song.
I think this is one of my favorite songs because Adam Levine sounds so in tune with the lush instrumentation, with nice lyricism to match.
Life: Save Me
by Dave Matthews
Dave Matthews' album "Some Devil" was an underrated gem in my eyes, at least on the parts that were very strong ("Gravedigger" included"). There's a definite story about living in this song, complex, and a lesson to take from it that resonated with me, even after the first time I heard it. I would say this is one of my favorite songs from that album overall.
Fell on Black Days
by Soundgarden
I remember first hearing this end of high school, beginning of college, and I think was a song to get me through those years because I could identify with it. It came even more approriate when riding some difficult waves of my life in college.
Mental Breakdown: Cold Dark and Yesterday
by Hall and Oates
This is really not a depressing-sounding song in the least, but it's probably among the darkest song I've heard from them. It's very melodic, catchy 80s pop rock in the style of soul/blues. I love the lyrics in this song, because you feel the speaker in this is slowlymentally coming apart and losing his ground.
Driving: Everlong
by Foo Fighters
Definitely a favorite song from Foo Fighters for me. I could imagine driving to this. I don't
Flashback:
Friend or Foe
by t.a.T.u
Honestly, I'm not all that big of a fan of t.a.T.u, but I love this song. Probably one of the stand out songs from them for me. I think because I first heard it on internet radio and it clicked with me. I guess since we have conflict vibes coming in different points of this list, this would be representative, but honestly, this randomly came up on my list and I haven't listened to it in ages.
Getting Back Together: Weak
by SWV
One of my favorite girl groups of the early 90s. I always feel nostalgic hearing this song.
Wedding:
House of Cards
by Radiohead
I could see this song playing at my wedding reception, and dancing to it with my beloved, I guess you could say (beloved? I guess that's a bit of an antiquated term, butah well). It's so romantic in its overall vibe, and the opening line "I don't want to be your friend/I just want to be your lover" says it all, really.
I think if I had to choose an actual wedding song, I'd decide with my husband to be, but I think it will be a while before I'm to that point with anyone.
Honeymoon:
Pictures of You
by the Cure
I've liked the Cure for a long, long time. I think this was one of the token bands I listened to during my high school years. Still do today off and on.
"Pictures of You" remains one of my favorite songs. Theme song, yeah, you could say that even. It just has that really lush, yet dark romantic quality that resonates with you. Of course, "Love Song" does that too, but I think "Pictures of You" really encapsulates that emotion in the images it portrays.
Fight song: Loose Ends
by Imogen Heap
Definitely a song that indicates a bit of a conflict exists, but it sounds so melodic and soothing, you wouldn't think of it. I really enjoy listening to Imogen Heap, she's one of the more current artists I follow in the music spectrum.
Death Scene:
Acceptance Speech
by The Friendly Indians
Hahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG, that's terrible. It's probably the most anti-death scene theme you could ever imagine, though if you're a fan of dark humor, it'd actually be a perfect song. I could imagine a renegade stumbling in their tracks just before their final moments, and then leaving the world with a grin on their face.
Wrong on so many levels, but it's a very good song.
Funeral Song:
Bridges To Burn
by Charlie A'Court
Perfect song. Just a perfect song all around. Charlie A'Court is a blues/soul singer whom I wonder if anyone ever listens to his music-terribly underrated. I love his stylistics and vocal to tears. It fits so well with this particular thematic because it is a song of remembrance.
End Credits:
My World Down
by meister/Mark Gardner
Another perfect song. This song some might know is the ending theme song from a musical anime series called BECK. It's a great rock song, with multilayered fuzz tonalities and a vocalist who sounds like he's rocking that microphone. One of the best songs in English I've heard in such context.

Ultimate Music Survey
2007年 11月 23日, 19:08
I really wish I knew who to credit for these surveys-you acutally find them all over the place here, but they're so fun to take :P Admit it, you love them too.
Favorites
What is your favorite genre of music? Don't have one.
Why?Because I listen to a LOT. Not an understatement.
Name your favorite band(s): Suffice to say I don't have just one. Which genre? :P
Name your favorite solo artist(s): Right now? Sara Bareilles
probably among the recent music scene, but I don't have a general favorite.
What is your favorite album?: In the current year, probably Radiohead's In Rainbows
. If you asked me in general-same answer as in "favorite band".
What is your favorite album cover?: I'll come back to this question
Name your favorite song(s): way too many for the sake of this entry.
Favorite CD you own: You mean the ones that have been played so much that they have scratches on the bottom? I'd include OK Computer
and August and Everything After
among the top. To be honest though, I love ALL my CDs-except for a few I wonder why the devil I bought them.
Favorite song on your computer: I'll come back to this one too
Favorite song you DON'T have:I guess Gladys Knight's cover of Strong as Steel
-which I can't find ANYWHERE *grumbles* I love that cover the best though.
Favorite lyrics: Since I judge most songs by their lyrics, this is hard. Going to the next question for now.
Favorite vocalist: too many to name.
Favorite guitarist: Slash
, I love Slash-I'd also cite Jimi Hendrix
, John Petrucci
and Prince
among others.
Favorite bassist: Too many to name
Favorite drummer: Too many to name
Favorite instrumentalist (any instrument not mentioned above): Django Reinhardt or Miles Davis
Favorite classical / jazz composer: Classical-definitely Beethoven or Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; Jazz composer, probably Bill Evans
Favorite rapper: Nas
, because he speaks his mind well when it comes down to it.
Favorite theatrical score: The Secret Garden
OST by Zbigniew Preisner, loved it.
Favorite of anything not mentioned: Favorite Japanese album as of late: probably Abingdon Boys School.
The bad stuff
What's your least favorite genre of music?: Hard to say, I try to have an open mind and pretty much listen to whatever's put on my plate. I'm not going to knock against emo or country music, but I'd say those are the two least genres I listen to.
Who's your least favorite band?:Right now, I don't really like The Last Goodnight
- I don't see the hype surrounding them.
Who's your least favorite solo artist?: Hard to say.
Who do you think is the most annoying musician?: How the devil did Lil' Mama
get a record contract? that Lipgloss song and her singing sucks so muchI'm sorry to come down harsh, but that's not music-at ALL.
If you could shoot any "artist" or "band", who would it be?: How about I "shoot" this question because it's asked too much XD I don't really like the question either, lol.
Who do you think is the least talented?: Hard to say.
Least favorite song: Don't really have one.
Most annoying song: Hard to say
Most repetitive song: Umbrella
-ella-ella *grins widely* :D
Last song to be stuck in your head: Probably Soulja Boy
, a few of the kids were listening to it while I was at work.
Did this survey just get that song stuck in your head again? Yes T_T
Worst band that used to be good?: Honestly couldn't tell you.
A good band that used to suck?: Don't know the answer to this either.
Your musical background
What was the first music you remember listening to?: A lot of jazz, classical, and oldies music.
What type of music do your parents listen to?: My father listens to everything pretty much, but his root in music comes from oldies/Motown/classic rock. My mom is a fangirl for Prince. :P She's also more of a soul/R&B listener.
Do you play any musical instruments, or sing? If so, elaborate.: I used to sing, was in a choral group a long time ago, also took lessons for flute, piano/keyboard and guitar. All, save for vocal and keyboard, lasted less than a year. Keyboard I still continue to date, and singing I fell out of after about 4 years, but I still sing for expression-usually when I'm just by myself or karaoke with a favorite song I'm listening to. My vocal isn't good though :P
Do you take lessons for instruments or voice? If so, for how long?: see above
Do you plan to / have you gone to college for music?: No, but I did take a few musical themed classes (Jazz and Explorations in Modern Music)
Who are your musical inspirations?:Very broad spectrum of artists, I may come back to this, but it's a lot to name.
Who was your first favorite band or artist?: That's hardI'll have to think on that one too XD
Who is your most recent favorite band or artist?: In the Japanese music perspective-Aya Kamiki
and BACK-ON
, in the English music perspective, as I mentioned before Sara Bareilles.
What styles of music are you interested in learning about?: ANY
What styles of music do you already know a lot about?: A little bit of a lot, I don't think I'm proficient in any one genre-which makes it difficult sometimes to discuss music with others.
Do you know much about musical theory? If not, would you like to?: Very little if any, but I would like to.
If you take lessons, do you like your teacher(s)?: I'm not actively taking lessons now, I'm self-teaching as of current-but my life and other goals have taken priority.
How many different music teachers do you have, or have you had?: 2 or 3 at most, and only because of the different areas I've tried.
This or that
Classical or jazz?: Both!
Classic rock or modern rock?: Both!
Rock or Rap?: Rock
Emo or Punk?: Punk, babe ;)
Funk or Blues?: A little bit of both.
Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin?: I plead the fifth-whoever came up with this question is cruel, lol
Bob Marley or Michael Franti?: Bob Marley
Coldplay or Radiohead?: Radiohead!
Guster or Dispatch?: I'd say Guster.
John Mayer or Jack Johnson?: Definitely John Mayer.
Eminem or 50 Cent?: Eminem by a landslide.
Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera?: Christina, because the girl can sing, no one can take that way from her.
Backstreet Boys or N'SYNC?: Probably N*sync, they had better vocal chemistry, but I don't like boy bands to be honesttoo manufactured and not enough heart-which is what I look for in good bands.
The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?: The Beatles
Beethoven or Mozart?: Beethoven
Rachmaninoff or Debussy?: Rachmaninoff
Duke Ellington or Count Basie?: The Duke of course :)
Electric or acoustic?: I'm a bit of both.
Mandolin or ukulele?: Mandolin
Saxophone or trumpet?: Saxophone
Miscellaneous
Why do you like music?: It's cathartic for me, to be succinct. I love it as a way to relax and engage my senses.
When you're angry, what type of music do you listen to?: Hehe, I don't get angry, but I do listen to music based on whims/moods
Has music ever made you cry? When?:I plead the fifth. :)
Has music ever made you laugh? When?: First time I ever heard music from Sublime
-I love them
Do you like local music?: Most def, I try to check it out when I can.
What is the best show you have ever been to?: I don't know if this is from the angel of indie shows or major bands, so I'll skip this for now.
Have you ever played in any shows?: Unless you count my old choral work, no
If so, what type of music was it?: I don't know what I would describe it as-various/pop
Do you enjoy being on stage?: Believe it or not, yeah-but I hate public speaking-figure that one out :P
Do you like to sing, even if you don't consider yourself a singer?: I guess a little, though I actually have a weird aversion to my voice.
If you could meet any musician and ask them for advice, who would it be?: *thinks about it*
If you could just chill with any musician, who would it be?: *thinks about it*
What instrument that you don't play now would you like to learn next?: Probably saxophone
Do you like foreign types of music? If so, what types?: Yes!!! It makes up a large percentage of what I listen to.

Name your top ten artists on Last.fm:
1. Poets of the Fall
2. MONORAL
3. OLIVIA
4. Mark Gardener With Goldrush
5. Radiohead
6. FAKE?
7. meister
8. Keane
9. R.E.M.
10. m.o.v.e
How many times have you listened to number one?
278 times
Is this your favorite band?
About as close as you can get, considering how much I listen to them :) I listen to a lot of different genres, so it's hard to measure, but they are among my top ten bands among ANY genre.
What got you into number one?
The song "
Roses
"-I loved the lyrics to it and I heard it first after a rather tough patch in my life-I found it such a soothing listen, I thought I'd pursue the band a bit more-ever since then, I've been hooked, and both of the bands albums are among my favorite albums overall, if I had a top ten listhmmthat's an idea for another entry.
Why the hell have you listened to that so much?
See reason above. :P
Favorite songs of number one:
I think the vast majority of their songs are awesome. Love Sorry Go Round
;
King of Fools
;
Roses
;
Lift
;
Overboard
; and
Shallow
among many.
Something you think you’d thoroughly enjoy doing with the band?
I'd love to see them play a concert stateside, I'd be the first one in line buying tickets (provided they play somewhere on the east coast >_<
b]Favorite memory of the artist?
Watching their video for Carnival of Rust for the first time-it was like watching a warped Tim Burton mini-movie, but with a great song to accompany it.
How many times listened to number two?
130What got you into them?
In one word: kiri
What makes you like them so much?
They remind me of what I love about rock music-they're always original with their lyrics and melodies and the vocalist just comes across with such potent emotion. One of the best bands I've heard from overseas and in general(Hailing from Japan at that).
Favorite songs:
"Kiri" actually isn't my favorite song by Monoral to be honest: Don't you look away
, Sparta
, Like you
, Tuesday
and PERFECT GOLD
are among a few.
Favorite memory of artist?
Wish I had one, I want to see them in concert T_T
How many times have you listened to number three?
119Would you pay thirty dollars to see them in concert?
Oh, goodness yes.
Who's your favourite member?
Not a band, just a single artist. She's so prettyT_T *envy* Nah, I'm kidding, but I think she's wickedly talented, and would love to meet her in person. She seems like she has such a sweet, interesting personality.
Any fave songs/memories?
Olivia's an artist that continues to amaze me each time I hear her-my favorite songs to date, I would say are Wish
, Celestial Delinquent
, Starless Night
, Spiderspins
, and Recorded Butterflies
, among many.
My introduction to Olivia were through the songs Dress Me Up and re-ACT.
How many times have you listened to four?
88Would you go fishing with him?
I don't know, is he the type to fish? :P
Any particular emotions run through you when you listen?
Definitely, he has a such a soothing vocal, even in his solo work. I always fill with a sense of nostalgia whenever I hear him.
What songs you like best?
Definitely "Snow in Mexico" and "To Get Me Through".
How many times have you listened to five?
86What’s so intriguing about them?
Radiohead is a band that's hard to put a finger on-they're really what you could call a band of many colors/stylistics wise. People tend to think their overrated, but I see a potency in Thom Yorke's vocals and the overall stylistics in the group that many bands don't have.
Could you imagine them in a circus?
Goodness no. XD
How many times for six?
84How many 3’s in a <3333333 would you give them and why?
For Ken Lloyd and Inoran-I'd give a hundred or more :)
How many times for 7?
82I hear 7 is a magical number, is this band magical?
Magical in the sense of variance-very characteristic of shoegazer and stylistic rock-this band (c/o Ryo Matsui) is so underrated it's a shame.
What are some of your favorite songs and what memories are attached to them?
I'd say "My World Down"-I remember the scene in BECK (anime, but it's an English song), where the band was rocking it out-that scene was very well animated. Another few favorites-"I call you love", "i want you to show me" and "it's my life" to name a few.
How many times for eight?
81How long have you liked this artist?
Since Keane first broke through into the U.S.
What are some songs you like/why?
Definitely Somewhere Only Where We Know; Is it Any Wonder; and Your Eyes Open-the latter being one of my favorites.
Which member would you most enjoy a good square dance with?
Probably Tom Chaplin-he seems like he could enjoy it and could probably teach me how :)
Random fact you know about the band?
That Keane actually didn't get their name until 1997.
Poor nine and ten, how many times you listened to them?
78 and 74
Why have them as number nine and ten, where is the loveeee?
I actually listen to and love R.E.M. a lot more than this :) For some reason, all of my scrobbling data was erased way back when, so they would be higher. m.o.v.e. on the other hand, I don't listen to anywhere near as much for them to be 10.
How long have you liked them?
I loved R.E.M dating back to middle school/high school. m.o.v.e I started liking after seeing the anime Initial D.
What are the poor artists from 11-20?
11. Clazziquai
12. Maroon 5
13. The Smithereens
14. Dream Theater
15. Ride
16. Chihiro Onitsuka
17. HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR
18. Flow
19. The Fray
20. Incubus

Coming back into some perspective
2007年 11月 22日, 18:58
It's been a long time since I've posted a music journal entry here, but I've had a few thoughts on my mind in terms of perhaps jumpstarting my activity on Last.fm back again. I've been listening to quite a bit of music, but as for being a part of the site, I haven't properly perused the site in a couple of years (i.e. utilize the forum, search for new artists, use the recommendation radio etc.)
I'm considering moving, or perhaps duplicating, my music reviews here on Last.fm. I maintain a media blog over at rosepetals19.wordpress.com, which covers anime, music, and intended for a number of other things in media. Lately I've been writing so many music reviews in both the English and Japanese/Korean music perspective, and I wanted to broaden out a bit to incorporate here because it is, indeed, music and appropriate. I listen to a lot of different types of music, so I think it would be a good way to introduce some bands I love, some bands I'm following, as well as any new music I purchase.
This is just an update to jumpstart my blogging activity here again-I'm going to follow-up with a proper entry on music by doing a few music quizzes (because I find them fun :P ). I sometimes make up my own, but I think I've found a few that I've wanted to fill out for quite some time, just haven't had the chance to.

Songs whose lyrics are on my mind at the moment
2006年 7月 8日, 4:36
I haven't listened to much music on my computer or anywhere as of late because of life in general keeping me busy, but since I just came back into it, I'd thought I'd share some of them with some rather nice lyrics.
Dani California
: The first time I heard it, I loved how detailed and potent the lyrics were in describing the death of an unfortunate young woman. And while it's probably one of the more toned down songs the band's done (in comparison to songs like Give It Away
and their romping rendition of Higher Ground
), the vocals, melody and lyrical content make this a modern classic. But of course, RHCP's music is love anyway. :)
The Love We Had (Stays on My Mind)
(Stays on My Mind): I know this is a cover of The Dells
classic, but it remains one of my favorite Dru Hill songs to date. The lyrics have a rather melancholy, lustful tone to them, and Jazz and Sisqo's vocals do an excellent job of getting into the heart of the song.
Alone
I really love how potently romantic this song is. The vocals are quite convincing and it's one of my favorite songs by Heart.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night
: This is a really old cover, but I really liked how Nirvana's version retains the grit and heart of the original. Kurt Cobain's vocals seem to give this song the perfect fit, especially when listening to the live version.
Chain of Broken Hearts
I've always thought Lisa Fischer was an underrated R&B artist, but this is a really nice ballad, with simple lyrics and a beautiful melody. I wouldn't say it's as great rangewise as How Can I Ease The Pain
or catchy like Save Me
, but it's a great song from a great album. I wish I knew where she was now. :(

Children's songs that somehow have a deeper meaning, Part I: Forever Young
2005年 10月 29日, 23:47
I was listening to Forever Young
, which some would recognize as the theme from the Care Bears 2nd Movieis it me, or does this not sound like something that would come from a children's movie? It really has a deeper meaning than something simple like the Spongebob Squarepants theme or something to that extent >_> Some will also recognize this as the song: Forever Young
I'll post the lyrics and show you what I mean:
Hello old friend
It's good to be with you
Time is standing still
Our love
Shines true and bright
It always will
My wishing star
Has guided all you do
My empty heart you fill
We still feel
Forever Young
Looking back
We're just the same
As we were when we began
This love will keep protecting us
Reach for me
And I'll take your hand
When we're apart
Just close your eyes
And you'll see me waiting there
You can always count on me
I will always care
My special friend
Inside my heart you'll stay
You'll be with me until
The sun
Shines through the night
It never will
My little star
You'll never fade away
The hands of time are still
And we'll be
Forever Young
Guitar Interlude
Step up and take my hand
One touch
And we'll be friends
Forever
Hello old friend
It's good to see you too
Time is standing still
Oh we'll be
Forever Young
Hello to you
It's nice to see your smile
Step up and take my hand
One touch
And we'll be friends
Forever
